Tips to say NO to Constipation

Constipation may be termed as the difficulty in passing one’s stool. Many people are unable to empty their stomach in even manners after the bowel movements that are also become difficult. These particular conditions may be referred to as constipation. Persons suffering from less than three or four bowel movements within a period of seven days are said to suffer from constipation. It is said to be the mother of many diseases that are related to one’s stomach.

Symptoms – Those suffering from constipation are unable to pass their stools in easy manners. It becomes small and hard. Strain during passing the stools is quite common amongst the constipated patients. They are unable to empty the stomach after the bowel movements in easy manners. Distention, abdominal bloating and discomfort in the lower abdomen are also the signs of this disease. Occasional diarrhea, anal fissures and bleeding are the symptoms of constipation. Those suffering from this disease may suffer from colonic perforation too. Obsession or psychological distress is also its sign.

Causes – Disordered central nervous system, stress and obsession for bowel movements are the culprits that may cause constipation. Pelvic dysfunction and colonic inertia may also lead to this disease associated with our stomach.

Poor diets without sufficient fiber in them are the factors that cause constipation. Suppression of bowel movements in frequent manners is also one reason behind constipation. Excessive use of stimulant laxatives and imbalanced hormones may also be behind constipation. Diseases including diabetes, cancer or scleroderma may also result in this disease.

This disease may be caused due to narcotic pain relievers including oxycodone and hydromorphone. Those taking antidepressants like amitriptyline and imipramine may fall victim to constipation. Drugs like dilitzem and nifedipine may also cause this disease. Phenyotin and carbamazepine that are harmful for the human body are also the culprits behind constipation. It may be caused due to Amphojel and Basaljel; the aluminium-containing antacids.

Treatment – The doctor may recommend blood test, physical examination, X-ray of the abdomen or barium enema for the constipated patients. Ano-rectal motility studies, Defecography, Colonic motility studies and MRI may also be suggested by the physician.  The physician may suggest Lubiprostone (Amitiza) or Linaclotide (Linzess).  Colchicine, Misoprostol (Cytotec) and   Orlistat (Xenical) etc.

Those affected with constipation are advised to adopt the following:

  1. They should take fiber-rich diets in good quantities.  Fruits, vegetables, oat bran, wheat, Konsyl, Metamucil, Citrucel, Equalactin, Maltasupex and others eatables containing fiber must be added to one’s daily diets.
  2. Junk and spicy foods must be avoided.
  3. Simple exercises, biofeedback and yoga asana are also beneficial for them. Physical activities are also good for the constipated patients.
  4. Sufficient water helps to remove the toxins from our body. It is good to say NO to constipation.
  5. Constipated patients must minimize taking tobacco and alcohol.
