What Is High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a chemical substance present in foods, especially fatty foods. When we consume these foods, the fats do not get digested easily. They flow with the blood and tend to accumulate in various regions, most notably in the inner lining of the blood vessels.

This is dangerous because it can reduce the supply of blood to the organs that the blood vessels are connected. Since blood carries oxygen, these organs suffer from oxygen deficiency as well.

High Cholesterol – Cause for Alarm

When high cholesterol deposits in the arteries supplying blood to the heart, it can reduce blood supply to the organ. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. It is one of the leading causes of heart diseases and heart attacks in the world today. In the US, more than a million people have heart attacks each year, of which about 50% are fatal.

Studies reveal that people who have high cholesterol have twice the risk of heart attacks than people who have healthy cholesterol levels.

If the blood supply to the brain is reduced, then it can lead to a stroke. This can leave the person incapable and paralyzed.

High Cholesterol – A Lifestyle Problem

Most of the cases of high cholesterol that are diagnosed worldwide today are due to lifestyle issues. The major causes of high cholesterol are:-

  • Wrong eating habits
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Lack of exercise.

All of these problems could be attributed to a faulty and unhealthy lifestyle.

At a worldwide level, about 30% of the people in urban societies have high density of cholesterol in their blood. Not All Cholesterol Is Bad

One of the commonest misconceptions about cholesterol is that all of it is bad. On the contrary, some cholesterols are actually essential for the body. There are two kinds of cholesterol:-

  1. Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL)
  2. High Density Lipoproteins (HDL)

The LDLs are unsaturated fatty acids such as ghee, butter, oil, margarine, and processed foods. This kind of cholesterol is hard and dense and it can clog arteries. It is present in omega-6 fatty acids.

On the other hand, HDL is light and has large molecules which cannot accumulate on the arterial walls. In fact, it picks up the molecules of LDL and takes it back into the liver for proper metabolism. This cholesterol is found in fish oil, lean meats, and other omega-3 fatty acids.

In this manner, LDL is harmful while HDL is actually useful. In general parlance, LDL is called as bad cholesterol while HDL is called as good cholesterol.

What Are the Causes of High Cholesterol?

  1. Diet — Diet is the main cause of high cholesterol in the world today. Foods that can increase the accumulation of cholesterol are all the LDL foods, also known as omega-6 fatty acids or saturated fats. Try to reduce the intake of as much LDL foods as you can.
  1. Body Mass Index — Keep a watch on your BMI. A BMI calculator will indicate if you are overweight or obese, and both these conditions make you vulnerable for high cholesterol related issues. In fact, an excessive weight is a direct indicator of high cholesterol deposition.
  1. Lack of Physical Activity — People who lead sedentary lifestyles are at a very high risk for cholesterol-related issues. The modern lifestyle of desk jobs has played an important role in increasing the incidences of this problem.
  1. Smoking and Alcoholism — Both these vices increase the accumulation of high cholesterol in the bloodstream and the arterial walls. Nicotine and alcohol can retard proper body metabolism due to which the fats remain in the blood.
  1. Genetic Factors — It is known that high blood cholesterol is regulated by a gene and hence this could be a hereditary problem too.
  1. Age — As people get older, their metabolism decreases. Digestion is also affected. Due to this reason, older people have a higher chance of accumulating cholesterol in the blood.
  1. Gender — Women tend to have lower cholesterol-related problems than men of the same age. However, older women who have crossed menopause are at a greater risk.

What Must You Do if You Have High Cholesterol?

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol via a pathological report, then you need to take the following measures:-

  1. Improve your diet. Cut out on the fatty foods and include more green foods in your diet. Have salads. Find out a list of LDL and HDL foods. Avoid the LDL foods almost entirely if you can and have a significant amount of HDL foods.
  2. Enhance your physical activity. This does not mean joining the gym. Even small things that you can do to keep your body in motion can help. Walk wherever you can. Do some housework. Do not watch TV while reclining on a couch. Keep moving.
  3. Invest in a treadmill if you cannot go out of the house for physical activity.
  4. Give up smoking and alcohol if you are habituated to them.
  5. Do not stress yourself much. Even if stress is not a direct factor for high cholesterol, it can impair the blood flow to your already impoverished organs. This can accelerate the chances of a heart attack. Be relaxed and take things easier.
  6. Keep a watch on your blood pressure. High cholesterol coupled with high blood pressure is a recipe for disaster.
  7. Include foods such as bitter gourd, beetroot, gooseberry, blackberry, in your diet. These foods are known to combat against high cholesterol deposition.

You will need to be more careful of these things if you have a parent or grandparent who has a history of high cholesterol.

Most importantly, keep up with the routine checks on your body. High cholesterol is something that can be completely managed, but you have to be aware of the condition of your body.
